The Cat^® PL72 pipelayer / sideboom is designed for medium size pipe diameter work and bridges the gap between the smaller lifting PL61 and the larger lifting PL83 and PL87. Where the smaller inch pipe work is being carried out but the wall thickness adds additional weight, the PL72 provides a safe and efficient solution.

Features & Information

Emissions Technology. The PL72 pipelayer meets the U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final / EU Stage V emission standards. Caterpillar engineers added Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to the already proven aftertreatment to achieve an 80% reduction in NO_x emissions. The technology is designed to regenerate automatically in the background while you work.
Performance. The PL72 features a non-suspended, Cat elevated sprocket undercarriage. Track roller frame length remains extended, with rear idler positioned downward, resulting in more track on the ground to enhance machine stability, especially in slope applications. Differential steering maintains full power to both tracks for best-in-class turning, even with a loaded boom.
Safety. Standard Roll Over Protection Structures (ROPS) that is rated for the Gross Machine Weight of the pipelayer. A Cranesmart Load Monitoring Indicator (LMI) is standard on all new PL series pipelayers to wirelessly feed the operator accurate load information. Rear vision camera is standard, and two additional cameras can be added as an option to further enhance visibility around the machine.
You talk. We listen. Updates made to the PL72 pipelayer based on customer feedback include: a load line block holder to improve rope life, boom lifting eyes to assist with handling and maneuverability during boom installation, and a counterweight rod holder for safe transportation. These improvements are made at factory level in 2021 and can be added to your current fleet on request.
